HOW IT ALL BEGAN

The King's Arms, where the seeds were sown for a new cricket club in 2001
|
The Reepham & Salle Cricket Club was formed in 2001 by a group of friends, predominantly from the Reepham area of Norfolk.
Reepham Cricket Club folded in the early 1990's and Reepham was, through the remainder of that decade the largest town in Norfolk not to have its own cricket club. When the neighbouring Salle Cricket Club also shut up shop in 1999 it became very clear that someone was going to have to step in and fill the void left by these two clubs.
Joe Hollis and a number of friends had been playing informal games of cricket since 1994, under the assumed name 'Kerdiston Cocks', in the grounds of his parents' house at nearby Kerdiston. It was tradition after these games to go and have a pint and some grub at the King's Arms in Reepham Market Place, which was owned by Peter Salisbury, an ex-PE teacher and keen cricketer. During these drinking sessions much was discussed about cricket, or at least the lack of it in Reepham! Anyway, it was in the pub that Joe and the others were introduced to Jim Everton, an old colleague and ex-Old Owens teammate of Peter's who had recently moved to Salle from Hertfordshire.
Jim being an avid cricket fan and mean leg-spinner in his day, like Peter, was flabbergasted that there was no competitive team playing in a town the size of Reepham. So, with Peter's backing and Jim's organisational skills, married with the enthusiasm of the “Kerdiston Cocks” a green shoots of a new club were formed in February 2001, with the hope of playing a half a dozen friendly matches that summer.

The main challenge was then finding somewhere to play before the beginning of the season. Reepham CC's old square at Stimpson's Piece was not a viable proposition due to neglect and the number of other sports clubs having taken residence since the Cricket Club folded. The newly formed (as yet un-named) Cricket Club had little finance to revive the pitch, so playing in Reepham itself was quickly ruled out in the short term. This left the Club with only one option; playing at the old Salle ground, owned by Sir John White some one and a half miles down the road. The pitch had had basic maintenance since the demise of the old Salle CC, primarily because two other “friendly” clubs had been using the facilities for their twenty over night matches. It was thus decided that the new club should play at “The Salle Church Ground” and would, as a consequence play under the name of both Reepham and Salle.
The Club's badge, designed by our resident groundsman Frank Parkinson, depicts the distinctive towers of the two churches of Reepham and Salle.

THE CLUB AT PRESENT
|
The Club, now in its tenth year is stronger than ever and in 2011 will be competing on Saturday for the second year in the Lucas Fettes Norfolk Cricket League Division 7 after winning Division 8 in 2010, as well as in the Mid-Norfolk Sunday Cricket League.
After ten seasons some of the original members from 2001 have moved on to pastures new for one reason or another, but there is still a core of half a dozen of the original 'Kerdiston Cocks' turning out at weekends. Those remaining founder members have been joined by many new faces, including a number of youth players from Reepham High School and a few 'older faces' such as Paul Harwood, an ex-Reepham CC player from yesteryear.
The Club has over the years been striving to improve the playing facilities at the picturesque Salle Church Ground. Particular attention has been paid to the square, with major works having been undertaken on the pitch. The ground is now showing the fruits of six years hard labour, with the pitch playing better than ever and at least as well as many Norfolk Alliance grounds we have visited in recent times. The Club is working closely with the Salle Estate to bring further improvements in the future and we are taking more control of maintenance, including the employment of our own grounds man. Much of the improvements to the playing area can be attributed to the hard work of ground stalwarts Frank Parkinson and Joe Hollis.
We now have a thriving youth section that practice on a Wednesday nights, with over thirty youngsters regularly attending. The Club has five qualified ECB coaches in Joe Hollis (Level 2), Paul Harwood (Level 1), Adam Pryke (Level 1), Simon Green (Level 1) and Mike Graver (Level 1) as well as the two qualified umpires in Martin Hickling and Joe Hollis. There is a dedicated page on the web site for news and information about all aspects of youth cricket at Salle.
Ten years ago the Club had nothing, apart from a 1950's leather medical bag which only contained a dusty
old bottle of smelling salts, a set of stumps and two battered and bruised sightscreens. Since then their have

been a few improvements to say the least! A new scoreboard, totally refurbished site screens and an all-weather practice strip with mobile net are just a small sample of what we have gained from a handful of years of fund-raising. The net, which has seen extensive use by the Club and the local community is perhaps the biggest asset as it has really helped to bring on the Club's youth players. The most interesting addition is the “Score Trailer”, which was created out of an old Dairyland Ice Cream Trailer rescued from a local scrap yard in order to provide much needed shelter at the sometimes windy ground. Of course the Club is always looking forward and will be investing heavily in the future; new sightscreens, covers, another net and a catching cradle are just a few of new additions that saw service at Salle during the 2010 season.
Cricket-wise the first major achievement came in 2007 when, after six years trying Reepham and Salle won Division 3 of the Mid-Norfolk Sunday Cricket League and finally got something to stick in the then empty trophy cabinet. This was followed up in 2010 when the club won Division 8 of the Norfolk Cricket League at the first attempt.

In 2008 Reepham and Salle Cricket Club ran three sides for the first time during a season; a first team competing in division two of the Mid-Norfolk Sunday Cricket League, a friendly XI and a new veterans XI playing under the alias "STEALERS", which was a great success. With the rapidly expanding youth section swelling the numbers, the Club continued with three sides in 2009. However, the need for our young players to get matches under their belts meant that a second league side was going to be necessary. As a result 2010 saw the return of a Reepham Club to the Norfolk Cricket League for the first time in nineteen years.
Reepham and Salle Cricket Club has developed a reputation for friendliness and good sportsmanship, which is primarily down to the fact the team, both on and off the field has been built on friendship and a common belief that cricket is to be enjoyed, played hard, but played fair.
